US durable goods orders rise 2.0 percent in March
WASHINGTON (AFP) Apr 24, 2003
Demand for warplanes powered a 2.0 percent surge in orders for big-ticket items from US factories in March, government figures showed Thursday.

The monthly increase reversed a 1.5 percent decline in February, seasonally adjusted Commerce Department figures showed.

Orders in the transportation sector, up three consecutive months, rose by 2.4 percent from the previous month as new orders for defense aircraft and parts soared 132.7 percent.

Durable goods are items expected to last at least three years, such as washing machines, cars and planes.
