Polish defense minister strikes military deal with Russia
MOSCOW (AFP) Apr 22, 2003
Russia and Poland signed a military cooperation agreement here Tuesday, four days after Warsaw struck Eastern Europe's largest ever arms deal with the United States.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said during talks with his Polish counterpart Jerzy Szmajdzinski that Moscow and Warsaw were now "headed for a new level of cooperation in military-technological cooperation.

"In the course of our talks, we agreed most questions linked to the sale of (Russian) arms, military equipment, parts and servicing," Interfax quoted Ivanov as saying.

Earlier reports said the agreement mostly covers the servicing and repairs of military sold by Moscow to Poland in the Soviet era.

Szmajdzinski was also expected to have talks with Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and Russian security council head Vladimir Rushailo before returning to Poland later Tuesday.

Moscow and Warsaw are close economic allies, with Poland dependent on Russian oil and natural gas.

However they differ on foreign affairs, with Poland firmly backing the US-led campaign in Iraq.

Poland, which has already joined NATO, agreed to buy US-made F-16 fighter jets Friday for 3.5 billion dollars (3.2 billion euros).
