Easter marches in Germany call for peace in Iraq
MUNICH, Germany (AFP) Apr 18, 2003
Thousands of people in Munich and other parts of Germany dedicated their traditional Easter pacifist demonstrations on Friday to peace in Iraq.

In Munich, demonstrators carried a cross offered by the Chaldean Christian community originally from southern Iraq to honor "our brothers and sisters from Iraq," said bishop Engelbert Siebler.

In Frankfurt, several hundred people staged a mass at a US military airbase and three men were arrested for breaking open a fence around the base with wirecutters.

The Easter pacifist marches began in Britain in the 1950s in favor of nuclear disarmement, reaching their height in Germany in 1983 when 700,000 people marched against the deployment of nuclear missiles.
