Greece willing to send troops to Iraq only under UN mandate
ATHENS (AFP) Apr 17, 2003
Greece said on Thursday it was prepared to send engineers and military doctors to carry out humanitarian tasks in Iraq but only with a United Nations mandate.

Greece could play a role in Iraqi reconstruction but it would be "under the aegis of the UN", Defence Minister Yiannos Papantoniou told state television.

"We've made this very clear to the Americans," he said.

Papantoniou said Grece could send military doctors and nurses and possible military engineers to provide logistical support.

The military mission would work "with the US military government (in Iraq) and later with the transitional civil government", Papantoniou added.
