Russian border guards praise ties with US as joint exercises end
VLADIVOSTOK, Russia (AFP) Apr 17, 2003
Russian border guards Thursday praised efficient ties with their US counterparts as they wound down joint exercises in the Bering Sea.

"We think that we managed to attain order on the frontier thanks to the precise cooperation between the Russian and US sides," spokesman Andrei Orlov said.

The exercises involved one Russian patrol craft and several US ships working on common patrolling issues such as efficient communication and aid.

The Russo-US border in the Bering Sea is considered as one of the most peaceful, with very few incidents and poacher interceptions to mar the record.

This year, Russian border guards did not find a single poacher ship in the region, while their US counterparts intercepted only four US craft violating the border.
