An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale shook northern Japan early Thursday, the Meteorological Agency said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injury.

The center of the quake, which struck at 3:00 am (1800 GMT) was located off the coast of Aomori, some 600 kilometers (372 miles) north of Tokyo, the agency said.

Its focus was 50 kilometers (31 miles) under the seabed, it said, adding no tidal wave warning was issued after the quake.
