The military expects power to be back up on a rotating basis to all neighborhoods within 48 hours, marine Major Don Broton said late Wednesday.
Six diesel-run power stations went on line Wednesday providing power to 3,000 homes, Broton said.
Baghdad residents have complained that the lack of electricity and running water has added to the chaos in the city since Saddam Hussein's regime crumbled April 9.
Power went down across the Iraqi capital April 3 amid heavy bombardment by the US-British coalition.
