Britain, Germany agree UN must play key role in rebuilding Iraq: Blair

Prime Minister Tony Blair said Britain and Germany agreed that the United Nations should play a "key role" in the reconstruction of Iraq, after talks with Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder here Tuesday.

"There is an agreement that, in principle, the UN must have a key role," in the reconstruction of the country after the US-led war which ousted Saddam Hussein's regime, said Blair.

While Britain has been the United States' main ally in the war, Germany joined France and Russia in steadfastly opposing the conflict.
