Paris urges restraint after US issues warnings to Syria

 French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin called for restraint and moderation after the United States accused Syria of aiding Iraqi officials and harboring chemical weapons.

"In the current regional context, restraint and moderation... are clearly necessary," de Villepin told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of EU foreign ministers here.

US President George W. Bush on Sunday accused Syria of harboring chemical weapons and issued a fresh warning to Damascus to "cooperate" in the war on Iraq.
