Moderate quake rattles southwestern Japan

An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale rattled southwestern Japan Saturday, the Meteorological Agency said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injury.

The epicenter of the quake, which struck at 1:28 pm (0428 GMT), was in Kagoshima prefecture, some 950 kilometres (590 miles) southwest of Tokyo, the agency said.

Its focus was 10 kilometres underground.
