Pentagon announces possible Aegis sale to Japan
WASHINGTON (AFP) Apr 12, 2003
The Pentagon on Friday announced the possible sale of an Aegis shipboard air defense system to Japan for an estimated 482 million dollars.

The system's powerful radars and computerized battle management system can track over a hundred airborne targets simultaneously.

"Installation of the Aegis combat system on ships of the Japan Martime Self Defense force will provide enhanced capabilities to Japan in providing for defense of its critical sea lines of communication," the Pentagon said.

The principal contractors are Lockheed Martin and Raytheon.
