Rumsfeld cites British success in Umm Qasr as model for other cities
WASHINGTON (AFP) Apr 11, 2003
US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld Friday cited British efforts to restore order to Iraq's southern port of Umm Qasr as an example for US-led forces to follow in other Iraqi cities.

"Take the port city, Umm Qasr. The British went in, they built a pipeline bringing water in from Kuwait . . . they brought ships in with food, they have been providing security . . . the city has gone from 15,000 to 40,000," Rumsfeld told a press conference.

"The British have done a fantastic job," he said, responding to challenges from journalists over the widespread looting in other Iraqi cities over the past three days.
