Putin stresses UN role based on Euro-Atlantic cooperation
SAINT PETERSBURG (AFP) Apr 11, 2003
Only the United Nations working on the basis of Euro-Atlantic cooperation can resolve international problems, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday after talks with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and French President Jacques Chirac.

"We stressed the unique role of the United Nations as a means for resolving problems in international affairs, (and) unanimously stressed that we cannot achieve this goal without cooperation in the Euro-Atlantic zone," Putin told reporters after their one-hour summit.

The talks in Russia's second city of Saint Petersburg were aimed at promoting a central role for the United Nations in Iraq in the aftermath of a war the three leaders had strongly opposed.
