Earthquake shakes parts of northern Italy

An earthquake measuring 4.6 points on the open-ended Richter scale shook an area of northern Italy east of the city of Turin on Friday, the national seismological institute said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the quake, which occurred at 11:26 am (0926 GMT) and had its epicentre near the town of Alessandria, some 90 kilometres (55 miles) east of Turin, local officials said.

The tremor was felt in cities as far away as Milan and Genoa.
