Baghdad braces for first day of prayers since collapse of Saddam's regime
BAGHDAD (AFP) Apr 11, 2003
Baghdad's mosques prepared Friday for the first Muslim prayers since US forces seized control of the Iraqi capital after the collapse of Saddam Hussein's regime.

US Marines occupied checkpoints throughout Baghdad, where no fighting was ongoing at around 9 am (0500 GMT).

Most Baghdadis remained indoors overnight as gangs of looters ransacked and set alight ministries, official buildings and the luxury homes of Saddam's cronies and relatives.

US troops, whose arrival in the Iraqi capital provoked scenes of jubilation, did not intervene in the looting.
