Shiite cleric just returned to Iraq target of murder bid
DUBAI (AFP) Apr 10, 2003
Assailants tried Thursday to murder Shiite cleric Abdul Majid al-Khoei, who recently returned to the Iraqi central city of Najaf, attacking him with knives, a spokesman at the London-based family foundation told AFP.

"They attacked him with knives as he was visiting Imam Ali's tomb. It was an assassination attempt, but the news is still coming in and we don't know if he died," he said. A statement by the foundation accused members of the fallen Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein.
