WASHINGTON (AFP) Apr 10, 2003 US forces "will be in control of Kirkuk," White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Thursday, after the seizure of the city by US-backed Kurds revived fears in Turkey of a wider Kurdish independence bid.
"American forces will be in control of Kirkuk," Fleischer told reporters after Ankara again warned that any bid by the Kurds to retain permanent control of Kirkuk would be unacceptable.
