Combat helicopters aid US soldiers in Baghdad battle

US combat helicopters came to the aid of soldiers on the ground battling Iraqi fighters in a district of central Baghdad Thursday, an AFP reporter said.

The firefight pitted Fedayeen paramilitary units against American troops in the al-Otayfia neighborhood, the correspondent said. In a nearby sector, two Iraqi tanks and three other military vehicles were destroyed.

There was no casualty information from the clashes but they paralyzed the entire district.
