"Our priority now is to stand alongside the Iraqi people to help them overcome this ordeal," Adwan told AFP, as uncertainty settled over Iraq a day after US troops seized control over most of Baghdad.
"The future of Iraq must be decided within the framework of international legality and reflect the choice of the Iraqi people, namely in governing themselves," said Adwan who is also Jordan's official government spokesman.
He said Jordan would foremost strive "to help the Iraqi people, during this transitional phase, secure food and medicine."
Adwan also reiterated his government's steadfast position of support for "Iraq's unity, sovereignty and security".
He also called for an "efficient Arab role, in coordination with United Nations and the international community, concerning Iraq's present and future", and pledged that Jordan will coordinate its position with other Arab countries.
