Loud explosions in southwestern outskirts of Baghdad
BAGHDAD (AFP) Apr 09, 2003
Massive explosions were heard Wednesday evening in the southwestern outskirts of Baghdad, despite the advance by US troops to the center of the Iraqi capital earlier in the day, an AFP reporter said.

A series of blasts lit up the sky around 7:50 pm (1550 GMT). The city's southwestern rim is home to the international airport seized by US forces last week.

It was unclear whether a battle was taking place between US and Iraqi forces or if an ammunition depot or other site with explosives had been hit.
