"The Iraqi people must decide the future of Iraq and choose their own leadership at this time. No one else can do that. This is Jordan's firm position," Moasher told AFP.

Moasher also warned that "a breakdown of security in Iraq would have serious repercussions" and said "internal security must be preserved in Iraq".

Asked about the status of the Iraqi embassy in Jordan, Moasher said: "There are no changes".

But he added that he had no knowledge if Iraqi diplomats in Jordan were able to contact the authorities in Baghdad.

"Events are developing quickly," Moasher said.
