"Hard fighting" could be ahead in Iraq: Cheney
WASHINGTON (AFP) Apr 09, 2003
US Vice President Dick Cheney warned in a speech in New Orleans, Louisiana, Wednesday that "hard fighting" could be ahead in Iraq, despite signs of the collapse of Saddam Hussein's regime in Baghdad.

Cheney said "there may well be hard fighting yet ahead," warning that forces loyal to Saddam Hussein still controlled key towns in northern Iraq.

He did, however, note that in downtown Baghdad, US forces were seeing "evidence of the collapse of any central regime authority."
