Fighting broke out on the southern side of Baghdad early Wednesday, AFP reporters said, hearing intense artillery and automatic weapons fire as US troops sought to tighten their grip on the Iraqi capital.The cracks and booms of battle began around 07:00 (0300 GMT) and continued with moments of intense firing followed by quieter periods only to become heavy again.
