"The situation needs friends to consult with each other so that they can unify their efforts to end the tragic situation of the Iraqi people which will have dangerous repercussions in the region," Maher told reporters.
Diplomatic sources said that de Villepin, whose country opposed the invasion of Iraq, earning praise in the Arab world, could visit other countries, including Saudi Arabia, Syria and Lebanon.
De Villepin's visit would come as the world community tries to reach a consensus on the administration of post-war Iraq.
French President Jacques Chirac said Tuesday he "totally shared" the opinion of US President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair following their summit in Northern Ireland that the United Nations had a "vital role" to play in the reconstruction of Iraq.
De Villepin was set to meet with his British counterpart Jack Straw early Wednesday in Paris for talks expected to focus on the shape of a post-war administration in Iraq.
