US warplane bombs Iraqi position on key Baghdad bridge
BAGHDAD (AFP) Apr 08, 2003
A US warplane on Tuesday bombed an Iraqi position on Baghdad's Republican Bridge over the Tigris, near Saddam Hussein's main presidential complex, an AFP correspondent said.

The bombing targeted the point of entry on the eastern side of the capital's principal crossing over the Tigris river. Two US Abrams tanks had rolled on to the key bridge from the western end Tuesday morning.

The bridge is one kilometer (about 500 yards) away from Saddam's sprawling Republican Palace compound, which US forces said they captured Monday.
