US warplanes bomb Saddam's Republican Palace
BAGHDAD (AFP) Apr 08, 2003
Two loud explosions were heard at Saddam Hussein's main Republican Palace compound in Baghdad early Tuesday as US warplanes flew overhead, an AFP correspondent reported.

The explosions came as US and Iraqi troops engaged in fierce clashes inside the palace compound, where US tanks could be seen moving amid heavy exchanges of tank, artillery and gun fire.

The fighting, which broke out at 5:00 am (0100 GMT), was still raging intensively more than two hours and a half later in the sprawling complex on the west bank of the Tigris river.
