US controls major routes into Baghdad: Britain

 US forces are in control of major routes into and out of Baghdad, British Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon told parliament on Monday.

"The Iraqi people will soon be rid of Saddam Hussein, his barbaric regime and the suffering he has visited on them," Hoon told the House of Commons.

The defence secretary added that British forces now had access to all parts of the key southern city of Basra and that soldiers were being "warmly received by crowds of local people".
