Hundreds of British troops on ground in Basra
BASRA, Iraq (AFP) Apr 07, 2003
Hundreds of British soldiers moved into the centre of Basra on foot Monday, seizing control of the main southern city's university from Iraqi militiamen, an AFP correspondent reported.

The bodies of 12 militiamen could be seen on the ground in the campus from where they had been firing on British positions.

"The university was a trouble spot," said Captain Guy Gatenby.

Rocket-propelled grenades and Kalashnikovs littered the ground around the bodies of the soldiers, who were dressed in a combination of civilian and military clothing.

Several hundred British troops could be soon on foot around the univeristy following a series of tank incursions in previous days.
