"So this notion of a siege and so forth, I think, is not the right mental picture," said General Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Asked whether the battle for the Iraqi capital would involve urban warfare comparable to that in Stalingrad during World War II, he pointed out that about half of city's residents were Shiites, who have been persecuted by the Saddam Hussein regime. "You could assume they would be helpful," he said.
"So you're going to have Baghdad isolated. You're going to have half the population that probably wants nothing to do with the ... regime. And then you'll start working at it as you can," said Myers.
The Pentagon said out US-led forces expected tough fighting as they continued their push on Baghdad.
