Powell had also visited Turkey and Belgrade in the two-day trip, his first overseas since the start of the war on Iraq two weeks ago.

During the day Powell held a string of bilateral meetings with some 20 European foreign ministers on the sidelines of a joint EU-NATO meeting to discuss post-war Iraq.

His last meeting before flying home to Washington was with Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov.
