US forces repel two counter-attacks on key bridgehead

 US forces repelled two heavy Iraqi counter-attacks early Thursday against the key bridge they captured over the Euphrates river, an AFP correpsondent reported.

The Iraqis deployed at least one tank in the raids, US officials said, but there were no immeidate indications of casualties on the Iraqi side.

However, one US officer told AFP: "When light comes they'll start to see the bodies and the uniforms and stuff."
