Maoist students smash Nike shop to protest war
CALCUTTA (AFP) Apr 02, 2003
Students belonging to Maoist rebel groups in the eastern Indian city of Calcutta went on the rampage Wednesday and smashed windows of a shop selling shoes made by the US firm Nike.

Calcutta police deputy commissioner Kundanlal Tamta told AFP that around 200 students holding anti-war placards and shouting anti-US slogans had stormed into the Nike showroom protesting the US-led attacks against Iraq.

"We are feeling insecure. We are not sure whether we will be able to reopen the shop under the circumstances," Kamal Jain, a spokesman of Nike shop, said.

Police were yet to make any arrests.

Hundreds of children also rallied here calling for a boycott of products made by US and UK firms.

"We will move from house-to-house in the city to urge people across the state to boycott the products which are brought to our country from the US and the UK," sad Asgar Ali, a 15-year-old protester.

"The protest is to hit their economy. If they become economically weak, they will withdraw from the war on Iraq," he said.

The march was organised by a city-based children's magazine, Mathir Kella.
