Heavy bombardment shakes Baghdad
BAGHDAD (AFP) Apr 02, 2003
Intensive bombardment was heard in Baghdad late Wednesday afternoon and plumes of smoke rose from several parts of the Iraqi capital, an AFP journalist reported.

The bombardments picked up again at 5 pm local time (1400 GMT). Columns of smoke rose in particular from President Saddam Hussein's Republican Palace compound in the heart of the capital, which had been struck earlier in the day.

It was not immediately clear if the latest raid had targeted the complex.

AFP reporters in the capital did not hear anti-aircraft fire or air-raid sirens.
