Coalition war jet crash-lands in Afghanistan, no injuries
KABUL (AFP) Dec 20, 2002
A warplane in the US-led coalition in Afghanistan crash-landed in a mine field at the Bagram air base north of Kabul, but the Danish pilot was not seriously injured, a military spokesman said Friday.

The F-16 Fighting Falcon, whose nose gear had reportedly collapsed, overran a runway at Bagram late Thursday and landed about 500 meters (yards) away in a mine field, the coalition said in a statement.

The Danish Air Force pilot and 30 nearby personnel who may have been exposed to toxic gasses from the crash were evacuated to a US Army hospital.

"They were all treated and released," the statement said.

"The cause of the crash is unknown. A board of officers will investigate the incident."

The sprawling base at Bagram, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Kabul, is home to thousands of troops involved in the US-led war on terrorism.

The coalition began military operations in October 2001 to root out Taliban or al-Qaeda extremists after the September 11 attacks in the United States.
