Toll of Italian earthquakes rises to 25

Rome (AFP) June 5, 2012

Two women injured in a May 29 earthquake in Italy's Emilia Romagna region have died, bringing the toll from two quakes that struck the area last month to 25, Italian media said Tuesday.

Liviana Latini, 65, was buried under rubble after a five-storey building in Cavezzo collapsed last Tuesday.

The 5.8 magnitude tremor was the second to hit the region after a 6.0 magnitude earthquake on May 20.

Though Latini was protected by sheltering under a kitchen table and dug out of the rubble 12 hours later, she suffered deadly injuries.

In a separate incident, a 46-year-old woman, hurt by falling rubble in the town of Cento during the same earthquake, was rescued but was in a coma when she arrived in hospital, according to local media reports.

The two earthquakes and a series of smaller seismic shudders have wrought damage estimated at 1.0 billion euros ($1.24 billion).

Fourteen thousand people have been forced to leave their homes or are too frightened to return because of the continuing seismic shocks.
