Lockheed touts performance of its enhanced bomb guidance kit

Bombs with Lockheed's enhanced Dual Mode Laser Guided Bombs kit successfully demonstrated their capability in various targeting modes for the U.S. Marine Corps.

Lockheed said that during recent USMC weapons and tactics instructor training in Arizona, 19 GBU-12F/B DMLGB weapons were dropped from Harrier jets against fixed targets in tactically representative engagements and performed successfully.

"We partnered with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps to support day and night exercises that employed our enhanced DMLGB," said Joe Serra, precision guided systems manager at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. "DMLGB's expanded launch area provides greater mission flexibility and standoff range compared to other dual-mode direct-attack weapons."

The company's DMLGB adds GPS/Inertial Navigation System guidance to standard laser-guided bombs for more precise targeting. DMLGBs can operate in laser mode, GPS/INS mode, or dual mode. Lockheed Martin last year upgraded the DMLGB's operational flight program software.

More than 7,000 Paveway II laser guided bomb kits for weapons have so far been upgraded with DMLGB kits, which use Paveway infrastructure and upgrades the Paveway's computer control group system with a GPS/INS dual-mode guidance capability.

Paveway is used on bombs ranging from 500 pounds to 2,000 pounds.
