AGU and Wiley Launch Open Access Journal, Earth and Space Science
by Staff Writers
Hoboken, NJ (SPX) Feb 10, 2014

Earth and Space Science joins a prestigious portfolio of research publications that are governed by AGU's rigorous peer review process.

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) and John Wiley and Sons have announced the creation of a new all open access peer-reviewed journal, Earth and Space Science.

Marking AGU's second new open access journal in the last 12 months, Earth Space and Science is the only journal that reflects the expansive range of science represented by AGU's 62,000 members, including all of the Earth, planetary, and space sciences, and related fields in environmental science, geoengineering, space engineering, and biogeochemistry.

Earth and Space Science will begin accepting submissions as soon as the editorial team is in place. Submissions will present and interpret key data sets and observations that contribute to a broader scientific understanding of the Earth and its environment, as well as our solar system and beyond.

Earth and Space Science will also welcome research that adds dimension to such observations, addressing topics such as methodology, theory, mapping, and modeling. In addition to direct submissions, Earth and Space Science will welcome, via referral from other journals, articles that meet AGU's high standards of excellence, but that do not fit the unique criteria of those journals.

"AGU's approach to publishing is centered on the understanding that, as the world's leader in Earth and space science publishing, it is our responsibility to support and shape the advancement of our science and our scientists' ability to make a difference in the world around them," said AGU President Carol Finn.

"We know that bringing high-quality studies and observations to the peer reviewed literature can play an important role in informing basic and applied research and shaping societal decisions. Earth and Space Science was created to fill that need, and we are pleased to be able to partner with a global leader like Wiley to provide this broad new fully open access journal."

"Wiley is proud to be partnering with AGU to launch this ground breaking new open access journal covering a broad scope including fast-growing niche disciplines that are currently underrepresented by existing publication outlets.

"We are strongly committed to working with the AGU to expand its open access presence in the Earth and space sciences and to providing the research community with a new high quality venue to advance scholarly communication," said Colette Bean, Vice President and Associate Publishing Director in Wiley's Global Research business.

Earth and Space Science joins a prestigious portfolio of research publications that are governed by AGU's rigorous peer review process. This includes the highly ranked Geophysical Research Letters and Journal of Geophysical Research - Atmospheres, and Earth's Future-an innovative open access publication that features trans-disciplinary research, editorials, and essays emphasizing the Earth as an interactive, evolving system under the influence of the human enterprise-which was successfully launched in late 2013.

The journal will publish articles under the Creative Commons Attribution License enabling authors to be fully compliant with open access requirements of funding organizations where applicable. The publication fee will be competitive with those of other broad open access journals.

A search is now underway for Earth and Space Science's inaugural editor in chief, who will lead a team of pre-eminent academic editors who are closely connected to their communities. Additional information on Earth and Space Science is available here.
