Inter-Governmental Conference on Space Applications Opens in Vietnam

The 7th conference of the Inter-Governmental Consultative Committee on space application program for sustainable development opened here on Thursday.

Participants in the three-day conference are representatives from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries; Australia, China, Fiji, France, India, Iran, Japan, Pakistan, the Republic of Korea (RoK), and the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The conference discussed international cooperation in the use of space, in particular, the use of remote sensing technology and geography information systems to estimate natural resources and monitor the environment, Vietnam News Agency reported.

These devices will forecast and review agricultural production in order to ensure food security for sustainable development.

The conference will also focus on social issues and issues relating to hunger elimination and poverty reduction as well as developing countries' status in the globalization process.

Speaking at the conference, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Manh Cam said that Vietnam is implementing the 1999 New Delhi Declaration and proposals of the Third United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Use of Outer Space (UNISPACE-III) for the benefits of regional countries and the world.

The move follows initial feasibility studies undertaken jointly since 1999 by scientists of the British Surrey Space Research Centre and the Vietnam National Centre for Natural Science and Technology.
