Kionix has announced first production shipment and general availability of the world's smallest high-performance tri-axis accelerometer, the KXP74. This product measures 5x5x1.2mm, the thinnest tri-axis silicon accelerometer available in the market.

When asked about the device's key benefits to customers, Bruce Finke, Vice President for Sales and Marketing, remarked, "It's small, ultra thin, competitively priced, provides very high performance - the best in the industry - and positioned to fulfill a myriad of motion-enabled applications in consumer products such as cell phones, MP3 players, PDAs and micro hard drives."

In addition to its small form factor, a key strength of this product lies in its very low noise performance. Ken Foust, Sales Engineer, indicates, "The SPI interface reduces system cost and its low noise is especially important for applications such as precision compass tilt correction where it will greatly reduce heading error." The KXP74 boasts a noise specification as low as 70 micro-g per square root Hz.

The KXP74 digital accelerometer with Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) eliminates the need for an analog-to-digital converter, reducing system component requirements and providing for a more competitive system solution.

Kionix's KXM52 tri-axis accelerometer has been in high-volume production since early 2004 and has found widespread acceptance in the consumer electronics market. It is currently utilized in applications such as laptop drop detection, cell phone gesture recognition, MP3 player pedometer functionality, GPS augmentation, and electronic compass tilt correction.

The KXP74 is the first of a series of new tri-axis accelerometer products Kionix will release in 2005. All of these build on the technology base established with the highly successful KXM52 product.
