Mexico City (SPX) Feb 04, 2005
At a ceremony last Thursday hosted by President Vicente Fox, the newly established satellite operator, QuetzSat, S.R.L. de C.V., received the concession for the Ku-band Broadcast Satellite Services (BSS) frequencies at 77 degrees West from the Mexican government.

This occasion marked the debut of QuetzSat, a Mexican-controlled partnership that includes principals of Grupo Medcom and SES Americom. The regulatory concession was granted to QuetzSat as a result of its winning bid during an auction that was conducted at the end of 2004.

QuetzSat is a Mexican partnership that includes Grupo Medcom, a leading Mexican media organization, headed by its chairman, Clemente Serna Sr., with interests in TV stations, publishing and corporate satellite networks.

Other partners include Ricardo Rios Ferrer, Luis Martinez Arguello and SES Americom.

Chairman of QuetzSat, Clemente Serna, Sr., said, "With this concession, QuetzSat will be able to offer competitive television delivery systems to Direct-to-Home (DTH) service providers that will result in a greater choice for television households both in Mexico and internationally.

"With our partners, we are confident that QuetzSat will realize the Mexican government's vision of wise use of the precious spectrum resource it has granted us today."

Pedro Cerisola, the Mexican Secretary of Communications and Transport, said, "We anticipate that having QuetzSat as a second national operator in our market will lead to higher quality services and bring our citizens a new alternative in satellite television program delivery among other services."

Robert Kisilywicz, Chief Financial Officer of SES Americom, said, "The QuetzSat partnership uniquely combines the solid media expertise of Grupo Serna with our satellite technology and operations capabilities, and at the same time, allows us to internationalize the Americom2Home concept."

He continued, "As has been demonstrated with the success of Americom2Home, providing a high quality, independent satellite platform for the delivery of DTH services, is a win-win-win, for the programmers, for the subscribers and for the satellite operator."
