 Washington - Dec 02, 2003
In a strategic win for the company, Intelsat Government Solutions Corporation today announced that it has been awarded a subcontract to provide a turnkey satellite communications system to support Bechtel National Inc.'s (Bechtel's) involvement with the Iraq Infrastructure Reconstruction Program.

Bechtel was originally awarded a contract with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in April 2003 in support of the Coalition Provisional Authority's reconstruction program.

The operational network utilizes an Intelsat satellite and its newly operational Mountainside Teleport to interconnect Bechtel's Iraqi reconstruction office in Baghdad with its termination point in the United States.

Intelsat Government Solutions worked with its subcontractor DataPath, Inc., a company specializing in the design, provisioning, integration, installation, and testing of satellite communications based systems, to effectively implement the turnkey system.

"Partnering with Intelsat on this project demonstrates Bechtel's recognition of the unmatched value our companies can provide when teaming up to manage and implement worldwide reconstruction and communication efforts," said Susan Miller, President, Intelsat Government Solutions.

"Intelsat's ability to go into a country with almost no communications infrastructure and help to rebuild it securely using a reliable and efficient network is one thing that differentiates us from competitors when serving this important customer segment in the U.S. and in other NATO countries."

Under its contract with USAID, Bechtel is repairing, rehabilitating and reconstructing vital elements of Iraq's infrastructure, including power generation and transmission, water and sewage treatment systems, airport facilities, the Umm Qasr seaport, schools, clinics, fire stations, bridges, rail lines and the telecommunications network.

The mission of Intelsat Government Solutions Corporation is to provide a range of sustainable, cost-effective, secure communications solutions to civilian government and defense/intelligence users by leveraging satellite communications as a core technology.

Intelsat Government Solutions Corporation offers highly responsive and innovative surge capacity solutions and augments government-owned military satellite communications systems, offering anchor customers assured access to customized payloads, capabilities and solutions.
