Navy Awards Inmarsat IT-21 Contract To Stratos

Bethesda - August 26, 1998 - Stratos Mobile Networks has been awarded a contract to provide Inmarsat-B High Speed Data (HSD) lease channel mode communication services to the United States Navy. This service will provide full-time Inmarsat-B, 64kbps service to forward deployed US Naval Vessels in support of the Chief of Naval Operations' Information Technology for the 21st Century (IT-21) Project. The award has a potential value of approximately $7M.

The purpose of the Inmarsat-B HSD lease channel mode communication services is to provide Automated Digital Network System (ADNS), data, voice and fax services in multiplexed encrypted circuits. The ability to provide full-time data services aboard its vessels is a critical piece of the Navy's Network Centric Warfare strategy. This strategy derives its power from the networking of a well-informed, but geographically dispersed force. IT-21 provides for the rapid exchange of information between Naval as well as Joint forces.

Stratos has provided similar services to a number of customers, including the Canadian Military and Coast Guard.
