Russian Space Forces To Be Formed By June 1st

keep a lid on it
Moscow - April 4, 2001
The Russian Space Forces, which will be a new type of Russian armed forces, are expected to be finally formed by June 1st, a source with the Russian Strategic Missile Forces has told Interfax.

Command structures for the Space Forces and strategies for their development are being put together, this source said. It is expected that the Space Forces will be mainly oriented towards launching and operating dual-purpose spacecraft designed for communications and navigation and high-altitude study of the Earth.

There is a great need for such vehicles, as the replenishment of their number will make it possible to provide the Russian armed forces with reliable space communications and thus increase the efficiency of control over them.

Russia's orbiting satellite group consists of slightly over 100 vehicles, 80% of which have already served out their guaranteed operating lives, experts note. In the early 1990s, they numbered 180.

As reported earlier, President Vladimir Putin appointed Anatoly Perminov commander of the nascent Space Forces on March 28.

Perminov was born in the Kirov region on June 16, 1945. In 1967, he graduated from the Perm military command engineering college and later served in the Strategic Missile Forces.

Upon his graduation from the Russian General Staff's Military Academy, he was appointed head of the state scientific research test rocket range at Plesetsk. Over a hundred spacecraft were launched under his command.

In 1993, Perminov was appointed head of the main department for the use of missile armaments and military hardware, and became chief of staff and first deputy commander of the Strategic Missile Forces in 1997.

Formed as a branch of the armed forces in 1992, the Military-Space Forces were disbanded and merged into the Strategic Missile Forces in 1997. In the view of some experts, this was a mistake and prevented the development of the Russian Defense Ministry's capabilities in space.
