Russia Has Chances Of Winning Tender For Launching Iranian Satellite

Russia has a good chance of winning a tender for launching an Iranian telecommunications satellite, Director General of the Russian Aerospace Agency (Rosaviacosmos) Yuri Koptev has said.

Koptev made this statement while accompanying Iranian President Mohammad Khatami during his visit to the Russian space mission control center in the town of Korolyov outside Moscow.

Russia has wide opportunities for cooperation with Iran in the space sphere, Koptev said. Iran announced a tender on manufacturing and launching a telecommunications satellite, in which Russian enterprises are taking part, he said.

"Russia has every chance of winning it [the tender], and then we will manufacture a satellite for Iran, launch it and, possibly, will control its flight," the Rosaviacosmos head said.

During the Iranian president's visit to mission control, he was scheduled to see the control rooms of the Mir orbital station and the International Space Station (ISS).

"Iran is a developing country planning to advance along different avenues of technical progress, including the development of high-tech and space technology," Koptev said.

EMS Technologies Wins Khrunichev Contract For Satellite Repeaters

Under a contract worth US$23 million, a Canadian unit of EMS Technologies has won a contract to supply Moscow-based Khrunichev State Research and Production Center, with three flight satellite repeaters and one engineering model.
