EO For Brazil's Long March
Beijing - Oct 13 (AFP) - China launched Thursday its Earth Resources Satellite, or ZY-1, the official Xinhua news agency reported. "A Chinese rocket, Long March 4-B, blasted off at 11:16 a.m. (0316 GMT) here today at the Taiyuan Launching Center, in north China's Shanxi province," the agency said. The satellite, jointly produced by China and Brazil, is designed to gather photographs for information on agriculture, urbanisation, water quality, and deforestation.

Taiyuan - October 13, 1999 - The satellites CBERS-1 and SACI-1 must be launched on October 14 at 1:26 am, Brasilia time, on the rocket Long March 4B, from the Launch Center in Taiyuan located 750 km far from Pequim, capital of People’s Republic of China.

The launching might be postponed due to non favorable weather conditions. The Minister of Science and Technology, Ronaldo Sardenberg, the President of the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB), Luiz Gylvan Meira Filho, and the Director of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), Marcio Nogueira Barbosa went to China, at the beginning of this week, to follow the operation at the Launch Center in Taiyuan.

In Sao Jose dos Campos, Sao Paulo, during all night, the Satellites Tracking and Control Center (CRC), at INPE, will be receiving information from the Brazilian team in China (20 technicians), adjusting its system to receive the first data from CBERS-1.

The press will be able to follow up all the work done at CRC/INPE. A Press Conference through video conference is planned for 11 a.m., at the same day. Journalists at CRC, Sao Jose dos Campos, will be able to interview the minister Sardenberg in China, as well as, the Brazilian ambassador in China, Affonso Celso Ouro-Preto, the president of the Brazilian Space Agency, the director of INPE and the technicians from INPE.
