Press Release from Business Wire: CelluForce
(AFP) Sep 22, 2025
MONTREAL, Sept 22, 2025 (BSW) - CelluForce, the world leader in cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), today announced the launch of CelluShield?, a high-performance, bio-based barrier coating that enables recyclable flexible packaging without sacrificing shelf life or product protection.

Made from renewable cellulose and formulated as a water-based coating, CelluShield? combines excellent oxygen and moisture barrier properties with compatibility for existing recycling streams. By enabling mono-material structures, the technology helps packaging manufacturers meet both performance demands and circular economy goals.

Developed in collaboration with FPInnovations, CelluShield? reflects Canada's commitment to advancing innovative sustainable packaging solutions.

High-Performance Meets Sustainability

CelluShield? protects food, pharmaceuticals, and other sensitive products without harmful chemicals or complex multilayer laminates. Key benefits include:

-- High barrier performance: OTR < 1 cc/m^3*day and WVTR < 1 g/m^3*day at 1 gsm coat weight.

-- Recyclable mono-material design: Enables PE, PP, or PET structures to meet EPR and EU PPWR requirements.

-- Safe & renewable: Bio-based, PFAS-free, VOC-free, chlorine-free, FDA and Health Canada compliant.

"Brand owners and converters no longer need to choose between performance and recyclability," said Sébastien Corbeil, President and CEO of CelluForce. "CelluShield? delivers a practical solution that protects products, reduces carbon footprint, and simplifies recycling while using a water-based technology that runs on existing equipment."

Seamless Integration

Engineered for easy adoption on existing production lines, CelluShield? is applied using reverse gravure coating and works with standard lamination for PE, PP, and PET films. It is available as a ready-to-use coating for in-house application or as pre-coated film for streamlined supply chain integration.

Empowering the Packaging Value Chain

-- Converters: Turnkey path to recyclable, high-barrier structures without costly retooling.

-- Brand owners: Supports goals for 100% recyclable packaging and lower carbon footprint while extending shelf life.

-- Consumers: Benefit from safer, more sustainable packaging.
