US President Barack Obama returned to snow-covered Washington early Saturday after clinching an "unprecedented" 11th-hour deal on climate change in Copenhagen.

Obama landed at Andrews Air Force Base just outside Washington around 1:10 am (0610 GMT).

He had raced back to Washington to avoid the worst of a winter storm barreling through the northeastern United States that threatened to dump up to two feet (61 centimeters) of snow on the last weekend of the Christmas holiday shopping season.
