US President Barack Obama said Tuesday the world had moved closer to a "strong operational agreement" on climate change at next month's Copenhagen summit after his talks with Indian and Chinese leaders.

"It's essential that countries do what is necessary to reach a strong operational agreement," Singh told a joint news conference with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Obama said he made progress with Singh, a week after the US leader's trip to China.

"It takes us one step closer to a successful outcome in Copenhagen," Obama said.
