Russia launches monitoring satellite MOSCOW (AFP) Aug 27, 2005 Russia successfully launched a monitoring satellite from the northern Plesetsk cosmodrome, space officials said. The Monitor-E satellite, which was placed in orbit early Saturday, would help mapping, control over environment pollution, and monitoring emergency situations of natural or technological type, the Khrunichev space center spokesman said. "This is the first time that a small-size satellite matches heavy ones in its work parameters and can help resolve a wide range of social and economic problems," Alexander Bobrenev said.
