A Russian Proton-M rocket blasted off early Wednesday from Russia's Baikonur space base in Kazakhstan, carrying a Russian telecommunications satellite, the Russian news agencies reported, quoting Russian space officials.

The Express-AM2, which belongs to a new generation of telecommunication satellites, was successfully launched and was expected to be placed into orbit at 08:05 am (04:05 GMT), the officials said.

The satellite, which belongs to Russia's Kosmicheskaya Svyaz company and was built in cooperation with France's Alcatel Space, will perform numerous data transmissions, and will carry television, telephone and Internet links.
